13th December - Camden Abu Dis
Following on from an 8:00am breakfast at
9:30am the British Cadfa members gave an insight into their backgrounds,
education and future aspirations. After these insightful presentations we
started the official day at 10:30am at the Lake District. We split into our
leaders and student groups and ventured through the incredible views which took
back our Palestinian guests and Cafda members by surprise.
Our leaders and student groups then took us
through the lake taking us to views that were never expected by any of us
because of the beauty we were witnessing, one of the Palestinians guests said a
quote I will never forget “enjoy this beautiful view because it’s as far as the
eye can see and for us all we can see is the apartheid wall”.
There were great views of mountains,
forests, trickling water into the lake and a stunning forest. Due to restricted
Palestinian movement the travelling on foot freely through the autumn leaves
and trees surrounded by nature was definitely very unusual for the
Palestinians. Some of the British people wished to go back early but every
single Palestinian savoured the views and freedom and went on for the extra
walk.
We shared many stories on the hike about
differences of life in London and Palestine, but as much as there were
differences the similarities were many. The main one being the awe of the
nature all around us, typically many debates broke out about the most serious issues involving the Palestinians and
everybody came away from the hike gaining knowledge on each others cultures,
British nature and becoming a much closer group
